A €61,450 Santa Fe Hybrid? The Story of How I Almost Fainted on Hyundai France’s Website

It finally felt like it was about time to change my car. While there are many local European brands available, as a Korean, my mind naturally drifted toward Hyundai Motors—a brand I find most familiar and reliable.

With a light heart, I accessed the official Hyundai France website (hyundai.com/fr) to start a ‘Build Your Own’ session… but the moment the numbers appeared on the screen, I froze in disbelief.

😲 A Santa Fe Hybrid Starting at €61,450?

The price clearly displayed on the screen for the Santa Fe Hybrid (HEV) was a staggering €61,450.

Calculating this at the current exchange rate (1,744 KRW per Euro), it comes out to approximately 107.16 million KRW. I selected the top-tier ‘Calligraphy’ trim but didn’t even add any options—just changed the exterior color—and the price shot past 100 million KRW in an instant. Considering you can get a fully-loaded Santa Fe Hybrid in Korea in the 50-million-KRW range, you could essentially buy two cars in Korea for the price of one here.

Even the standard hybrid model, not just the Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV), is being treated as a jaw-dropping luxury car in France. (For reference, the PHEV model exceeds €75,000, which is over 120 million KRW).

🧐 Why is there such a massive gap?

The discrepancy is too large to dismiss as a mere difference in the cost of living. Looking at the data point by point, several clear reasons emerge:

1. The Dreaded 20% VAT (TVA): Most European countries have a Value Added Tax of 20%. That is exactly double Korea’s 10%. If you buy a 100-million-KRW car, 20 million KRW goes straight to taxes.
2. Punitive Environmental Regulations: European carbon emission standards are extremely strict. Even for hybrids, if they exceed certain thresholds, environmental levies paid by the manufacturer are passed directly onto the consumer price.
3. Logistics and Tariff Barriers: This includes the shipping costs and customs clearance fees for a car manufactured in Korea that has traveled halfway across the globe.
4. Differences in Distribution Structure: The profit margins for local European dealerships are set much higher than the direct/agency structure found in Korea.

🛠️ “How will you manage a $100,000 asset?”

Buying a Santa Fe in Europe is not just purchasing a means of transportation; it is more like acquiring a ‘massive asset’. However, as high as the car price is, the maintenance costs are also beyond imagination. Hourly labor rates at West European repair shops start at over €120, and the cost of parts is inflated to an incomparable degree compared to Korea.

I began to wonder, “Does it make sense to hesitate every time I need to replace a simple consumable just because the car cost $100,000?”

Is DIY a Necessity, Not an Option, Abroad?

While labor costs in Korea have risen, they still don’t compare to those in Western Europe or the US. I used to see scenes in foreign TV dramas where the father spends the weekend repairing the car and never really understood it. Now, look at me—I’ve become just like those foreign dads, repairing my own car on the weekend.

The process of ending up with DIY abroad is quite simple:
1. Complicated Bookings: Getting a service appointment is a headache.
2. Overpriced Parts: There is a 2x to 5x price difference between buying a part locally versus buying it from a Hyundai/Kia parts shop in Korea and having it shipped.
3. Savage Labor Costs: Diagnostics alone start at a base of €180, plus actual repair labor ranging from €120 to €180 per hour.
4. Old Cars: For older vehicles, it is common for the repair bill to exceed the actual value of the car if you can’t fix it yourself.
5. For these reasons, for those living abroad long-term, self-maintenance becomes a necessity rather than a choice.

[Closing]
Trying to change my car led to an unexpected ‘stats’ shock, but it certainly provided some strong business motivation. My data analysis will continue until the day all Hyundai/Kia drivers in the US and Europe can enjoy their car life with confidence and without getting ripped off. 🥂
